General Item Setup
The packaging solution extends the standard Business Central item card with packaging-specific fields. These fields control how items behave in packaging processes such as packing orders, container orders, and colli planning.
Packaging Type
The Packaging Type field on the item card determines the item's role in the packaging process. The following types are available:

| Standard Item | A regular item with no special packaging behavior. |
| Consumption Item | An item that is consumed during the packaging process. |
| Configurator Item | An item that uses the product configurator for BOM calculation. |
| Desiccant Item | An item used for moisture protection (desiccant). |
| Container Item | An item representing a shipping container. |
Key Packaging Fields on the Item Card

| Is Package Item | Enables package tracking for the item. Required for package items. Automatically sets Auto. Assign Parcel No. and Has Inside Dimensions to true. |
| Planning w/o Package No. possible | Allows colli planning for this item without requiring a package number. Only available when Is Package Item is enabled. |
| Container Type Code | Specifies the container type for container items. Visible only when Packaging Type is set to Container Item. |
| Mass Calc. Weight | Weight value used in mass calculations. |
| Desiccant Unit | Unit of desiccant for desiccant items. Visible only when Packaging Type is set to Desiccant Item. |
| Packing Calculation Template Assignments | Defines which BOM calculation templates can be used for this package item. Accessible via the Packaging action group. |
Note
When setting Is Package Item to true, the fields Auto. Assign Parcel No. and Has Inside Dimensions are automatically enabled and cannot be disabled for package items.
Tip
Container items automatically receive recommended settings when the Packaging Type is changed to Container Item. The outside dimensions are populated from the selected Container Type Code.
