Item Classification

After you have created the PPWR materials, you classify your items with regard to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. To do so, acadon PPWR adds a PPWR FastTab with the same fields to the Item Card, the Item Variant Card and the Item Category Card.

How to classify an item

  1. Choose the Search icon, enter Items, and then choose the related link.
  2. Open the required item and expand the PPWR FastTab.
  3. Fill in the fields according to the following table.

Fields

Field Description
Material Code Specifies the PPWR material of the item. You select it from the PPWR Materials list.
Substance Restriction Specifies whether the item is subject to a substance restriction under the PPWR. The field has three states: blank (not yet specified), Yes and No.
Recyclability Specifies whether the item is recyclable under the PPWR. The field has three states: blank (not yet specified), Yes and No.
Risk Assessment Specifies the PPWR risk assessment of the item. Possible values are Low, Medium and High. If the field is left blank, the risk assessment is not yet specified.
Non-Relevant Specifies whether the item is not relevant for PPWR compliance. The field has three states: blank (not yet specified), Yes and No. When set to Yes, the item is not taken into account for PPWR compliance and is skipped when the technical documentation is created.

Item variants

When individual variants of an item differ in their PPWR details, enter the deviating details directly on the relevant item variant. There, the PPWR FastTab contains the same fields as on the item card.

Item categories

On the Item Category Card you define the default PPWR details for all items in a category. The fields have the same meaning as on the item, but here they act as a default for the assigned items.

Tip

Maintain the PPWR details at item category level first. This way you define the details only once per category instead of repeating them on every single item.

How PPWR details are inherited

When the PPWR details of an item are evaluated — for example when the technical documentation is created — each detail (Material Code, Substance Restriction, Recyclability, Risk Assessment and Non-Relevant) is resolved individually. For each detail, the system uses the first level on which a value is specified, searching in the following order:

  1. Item variant — if the component uses a variant, its PPWR details are checked first.
  2. Item — if the detail is still not specified, the value from the item is used.
  3. Item category — if the detail is still not specified, the value from the item's item category is used.
  4. Parent categories — if the item category has a parent category, the search continues up through the category hierarchy until a value is found.

Because each detail is resolved separately, you can, for example, specify the Material Code on the item category and override only the Risk Assessment on an individual item. A blank Substance Restriction or Recyclability counts as "not specified", so the search continues to the next level until an explicit Yes or No is found.

Tip

Use Non-Relevant for items that are not packaging and therefore do not need to be assessed under the PPWR. When Non-Relevant resolves to Yes, the item is left out of the technical documentation instead of being reported as missing PPWR details.

Note

Every PPWR detail must be specified on at least one level of this hierarchy. If Material Code, Substance Restriction, Recyclability or Risk Assessment remains blank on the item, its variant and all item categories, this is reported as a setup issue when the value is required — for example during the creation of the technical document.
