Production BOM — Basics and Use

A Production BOM (Bill of Materials) lists all components and materials required to manufacture a product. In Business Central, Production BOMs are a core element of the manufacturing module and serve as the foundation for production orders, cost calculations, and material planning.

How the Product Configurator Uses Production BOMs

The Product Configurator automatically generates Production BOMs based on BOM Calculation Templates. When a product is configured — for example through a sales order or the Production Routes page — the configurator evaluates the template formulas using the specified properties and creates a Production BOM with the calculated material list.

This means that Production BOMs are typically not created manually but are the output of the configuration process. Each configured item variant receives its own Production BOM that reflects the exact materials and quantities needed for that specific product dimension.

Benefits of Production BOMs

Benefit Description
Material overview A clear list of all required materials and components for a product
Cost control Precise calculation of production costs based on actual material quantities
Purchase planning Targeted procurement of materials in optimal quantities
Production efficiency Optimized production planning through timely material availability
Traceability Tracking of components for quality assurance and warranty cases

The Extended Production BOM Page

The Product Configurator extends the standard Business Central Production BOM page with additional actions and information:

  • Calculation Template: Opens the BOM Calculation Template that was used to generate this Production BOM. This allows you to review the formulas and logic behind the material list.
  • Properties: Displays the property values (dimensions, material specifications) that were used during the configuration calculation.
  • Production Text: Shows production-specific text notes associated with the BOM, such as special manufacturing instructions.

A Configuration Information FactBox on the right side displays the package dimensions calculated during configuration, including Length Inside, Width Inside, Height Inside, Length Outside, Width Outside, Height Outside, as well as Inside Square Meter, Outside Square Meter, and Tare Weight.

Note

If a Production BOM is already used in production (linked to active production orders), its status cannot be changed. The system displays a notification and prevents edits to protect production integrity.
