Configurator Item
A Configurator Item is an item in Business Central that is linked to a BOM Calculation Template. When a configurator item is used in a sales order, transfer order, or other document, the Product Configurator automatically opens so the user can enter dimensions and properties. The system then generates the corresponding Production BOM and Item Variant.
How to Set Up a Configurator Item
- Choose the
icon, enter Items, and then choose the related link. - Open the Item Card for the item you want to configure.
- On the Packaging FastTab, set the Packaging Type field to the appropriate value.
- In the BOM Calculation Template field, select the BOM Calculation Template that defines the configuration rules for this item.
- Optionally, set the Variant Nos. field to specify the number series used for automatically generated Item Variants.
Note
The BOM Calculation Template field is only available when the Packaging Type is set to a value that supports configuration. The item must also have a valid Unit of Measure Code assigned.
What Happens When a Configurator Item Is Used
When a configurator item is entered on a document line (for example, a Sales Order line):
- The system detects that the item has a linked BOM Calculation Template.
- A notification appears prompting the user to start the configurator.
- The user opens the configurator and enters the required dimensions and property values.
- Upon finishing the configuration, the system:
- Creates a new Item Variant with a unique code from the variant number series.
- Generates a Production BOM based on the calculated template lines.
- Assigns the variant and Production BOM to the document line.
Variant Number Series
Each configurator item should have a dedicated variant number series configured in the Variant Nos. field on the Item Card. This number series is used to automatically generate unique variant codes each time a new configuration is completed.
Tip
Set up number series with sufficient range to accommodate frequent configurations. Each unique configuration creates a new Item Variant.
